Fear of Flying cover art hi resThis one snuck up on us.

Erica Jong will speak at the Decatur Library at 7 p.m. Monday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the publication of her groundbreaking feminist novel, “Fear of Flying.”

She was scheduled to appear at the Carter Center but the event was moved because of the government shutdown.

The Georgia Center for the Book is presenting the program and says,
” ‘Fear Of Flying,’ Erica Jong’s most famous novel published in 1973, blew conventional thinking about women, marriage and sexuality out of the water, and went on to sell 27 million copies. In many ways, it articulated what women thought but which, through decades of silent complicity with the status quo, never voiced. In Isadora Wing, her fictional doppelganger, Erica created everywoman – not as she existed in public life in the 70s, but inside a woman’s own mind. Since its’ publication, Jong’s novel has been translated into 40 languages.”

Admission is free but you can expect a good crowd.
