Tonight the city of Decatur will hold the first of its “Terrific Thursdays” events to encourage residents to do their Christmas and holiday shopping at local businesses.

“Make Decatur your shopping and dining ‘mallternative’ this holiday shopping season, especially on Terrific Thursdays in November and December,” the Visit Decatur website says. “You’ll find cool deals at Decatur’s hottest shops, galleries and restaurants.”

There’ll be a Terrific Thursday every week through December 19.

Wallace Bryan, one of the co-owners of Trinity Mercantile & Design, said the home decor store plans to offer special discounts on personal gifts and accessories each Thursday of the shopping season.

“We feel it’s a great way to be able to interact with the community as people are out and about, beginning their holiday shopping,” she said. “We hope Santa Claus will visit us, because he did last year.”

Also, if you spend $200 at any Decatur store in the month of November, you can take your receipts to the Visitor’s Center at 113 Clairemont Ave and get a $20 gift card to a local restaurant.
