Five New Year’s Eve traffic fatalities reported in Georgia; two DUI arrests in Decatur

Icon_PoliceDUI arrests and traffic fatalities are a sobering reality on a New Year’s Day. Most of the local police agencies won’t be releasing any detailed stats until tomorrow, Jan. 2, because many of the officers are taking a well-deserved day off.

Here’s what we do know.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety reports that four fatal crashes have been reported statewide since 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, resulting in five deaths. The holiday reporting period ends tonight at midnight.

Two police agencies in the metro area reported traffic fatalities to DPS: Marietta Police and Cobb County Police.

The AJC reports that two Marietta residents died in an early morning accident on Wednesday and alcohol was believed to have been a factor. The Cobb County police department is working that case, which began in Marietta. To read the full story, click here.

Decatur Police Sgt. Jennifer Ross said Decatur Police made two DUI arrests last night, and details on the arrests will be available on Jan. 2.
