Atlanta Public Schools is calling off classes for tomorrow, Feb. 11 and Wednesday, Feb. 12.

City Schools of Decatur has rescheduled its regular board meeting on Feb. 11 to Friday, Feb. 14, at 8 am. This afternoon, CSD announced it would be cancelling classes as well.

“City Schools of Decatur will be closed Tuesday, February 11, due to the impending, rapidly changing and unpredictable winter weather event,” CSD said in a letter to parents. “The Governor has declared a State of Emergency for the Atlanta-metro area. We will assess the weather and road conditions again for Wednesday and Thursday, and let families and staff know if school is canceled through robo-calls, the CSD Facebook page, CSD eBlast and the CSD website. The Superintendent and staff are discussing options to address the make up of additional school days lost due to inclement weather. The Board of Education will be asked to approve any option prior to sharing this information with parents.”

DeKalb County Schools has cancelled classes on Feb. 11.

Fulton County Schools announced it will close its schools and offices on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Other school systems may follow, so check this post for updates on the situation.

Local officials are hoping to avoid a repeat of the embarrassing fiasco that unfolded on Jan. 28. Two inches of snow shut down the city for about three days due to a lack of planning and coordination by our elected officials.

APS said on its Facebook page that opening schools tomorrow would put students and staff at an unnecessary risk.

“The Atlanta Public Schools senior leadership team met earlier today to review the latest updates from the National Weather Service as well as state and local agencies,” APS said. “Due to inclement weather and for the safety of our students and employees, Atlanta Public Schools and administrative offices will be closed Tuesday, February 11 and Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Only essential personnel are expected to report for duty. All scheduled APS extracurricular activities and events will be rescheduled.”
