Updated May 9, 4:13 pm.

Avondale Estates City Commission has cancelled its meetings this month.

The city had scheduled a work session for city commissioners on Thursday, May 8, but it the city announced in its weekly newsletter on May 5 that the meeting had been cancelled.

According to the city’s website, the regular meeting for May 12 also has been cancelled. Neither meeting has been rescheduled. The next meeting, according to the city calendar, is June 23.

There are also no posted agendas on the city’s website for the cancelled meetings, so it’s not clear what the city commission was planning to discuss.

City Commissioner Randy Beebe said on May 8 that he had just learned about the cancellation of the regular meeting and wasn’t sure why it has been called off. Attempts to reach other commissioners were unsuccessful.

Mayor Ed Rieker has not responded to a message seeking comment.

For nearly a month, Rieker and City Manager Clai Brown have not returned messages from Decaturish.com seeking comment for articles about the city. On May 9, City Manager Clai Brown did respond to an email asking when the next City Commission meeting would be. As of 4:28 pm, May 9 he hasn’t responded to a follow-up question about why the meeting was cancelled.

The city recently hired Communications Manager Kelly Brooks. Brooks told Decaturish that she is unable to speak to the media, and that all comments must come directly from Mayor Rieker
