DeKalb County elections officials have announced there will be a public recount of the votes in the DeKalb County Board of Education District 5 race.

Candidate Jesse “Jay” Cunningham requested it. According to DeKalb County elections officials, Cunningham came in as a close third in the May 20 election. Here are the previously reported results:

Thad Mayfield – 35.95 percent

Vickie Turner – 28.03 percent

Jesse “Jay” Cunningham – 27.51 percent

“State law allows for a recount to be requested if the overall vote total is within one percent of the runoff candidates,” an announcement from the county says.

The recount will be held at DeKalb County Voter Registration and Elections Office, 4380 Memorial Drive, Suite 300, Decatur, GA 30032. It is open to the public, the county says.

The top two candidates in that race will face off in the July 22 primary elections.
