Decatur Police say a woman who was struck by a car while riding her bike Tuesday remains hospitalized but her condition has improved.

City spokeswoman Casie Yoder said that the investigation is ongoing, but it appears the bicyclist was struck by a car while she was attempting to turn left onto Waters Street from West Ponce de Leon Avenue.

“The bicyclist remains hospitalized at an area hospital,” Yoder said. “At this point, her injuries do not appear to be life threatening. Charges are pending against the driver of the motor vehicle.”

On Tuesday, the city reported that the bicyclist, a 26-year-old woman, had sustained “life threatening” injuries and said the driver was cooperating with the investigation. The city hasn’t released the name of the driver or the victim or provided any further details about the extent of the injuries and the possible charges the driver may face.

Decaturish.com has requested a copy of the police report from the city.

  • Cyclist and Driver

I heard from folks who know what route the cyclist always took that she was turning right off of Ponce onto Water Street. So seems like the driver didn’t realize she was slowing down for the turn and struck her from behind. Hope that a good analysis is done to see if there’s anything that should be changed structurally to avoid similar accidents in the future. Thank goodness she had a helmet on given the extent of her injuries everywhere else.

  • Concerned

After walking up to this horrible crash minutes after it happened it was apparent that the car was headed up the Ponce hill (STM Playground and Water Street on their left). It was unclear to me whether that car was simply traveling in that direction or whether they had just turned left from Water Street onto Ponce. I am curious to see what the police report says, thank you for attempting to track it down.
It is so great to hear that the cyclists condition has been upgraded. I was particularly worried about additional head injuries as her helmet didn’t stay on her head after impact. If anyone knows this women, please let her know that healing thoughts are being sent her way.
