Downtown Decatur is sprinkled with yogurt shops, but one local entrepreneur hopes customers are saving room for some ice cream.

Stacy Wisniewski said she wants to open Butter and Cream on Church Street by July 4. She’ll offer customers homemade ice cream and desserts.

On Wednesday she was putting the finishing touches on the interior. People walking by saw people standing around inside and stopped, leaning against the glass for a glance at the new store.

“I really hope we open by the Fourth,” Wisniewski said.

But like a good homemade ice cream, these things make time.

Wisniewski was a City Schools of Decatur Parent and PTA mom. She lived in Decatur from 1994 to 2009. Her kids’ friends knew where they’d get the best after-school snacks.

Her son Michael, who is home for the summer, is helping his mom prepare for the store’s tentative July opening.

“At my house, we never really had prepackaged snacks after school,” Michael said. “It was always something that she made. It was always something really tasty as well.”

Wisniewski says the store will make sauces in-house. There will be ice cream sandwiches in the freezer and cookies, too.

She said that she sees an upshot to offering a different kind of dessert right across the street from a yogurt shop.

Wisniewski said families often disagree about where they should go for food. Her store will give them another option so everyone will be happy.

“I think it’s good to have the cluster effect,” she said. “Look at Decatur. Does anyone complain when one bar opens next to another? Or two restaurants that both serve hamburgers?”

Wisniewski had a shelf full of cookies. They were soft, chewy and – like the name implies – buttery.

“Butter makes everything better,” Wisniewski said. “So does cream.”
