If your Friday commute on I-20 westbound sucked harder than usual this evening, the Georgia Department of Transportation is sorry about that.

“Georgia DOT deeply regrets and apologizes for the delays on westbound Interstate 20 in Douglas and Fulton counties this afternoon and evening,” the transportation department said via press release Friday evening. “Miscommunication between the Department and a contractor resurfacing I-20 in Douglas resulted in work beginning well before its authorized 9 pm start time. Immediately upon learning of the situation, the Department instructed the contractor to stop working in the roadway; by that time however, the evening commute had begun and traffic was irreparably snarled.”

GDOT promised to take “appropriate steps” to make sure its contractors don’t start their work ahead of schedule during the afternoon commute.

“Again, the Department apologizes for the delays and inconveniences caused,” the press release said.
