Avondale Estates thought the Georgia Department of Transportation was ready to get to work on paving U.S. 278, the city’s main thoroughfare, back in May.

The city sent out a notice to residents in April notifying them the work was about to begin, but soon had to cancel the notice when GDOT decided to postpone.

Now GDOT says it’s ready, and paving work on US 278 could begin soon.

“The contractor is installing granite curb as a part of the project on East Lake (Road),” spokesperson David Spear said. “The curb is needed to correct drainage problems in the area; it was set up in the contract, but the amount was not sufficient for the area, so more is being added to the contract … The paving will start after the completion of the curb in about five weeks.”

Shortly after the delay in May, GDOT said the drainage work would also need to be coordinated with the railroad schedule.

Spear said the US 278 work is a $1.5 million project that will resurface the road beginning at East Ponce de Leon Avenue and extending to Memorial Drive, in addition to the drainage improvements on East Lake Road. The estimated completion date is January 31, 2015.
