Smith Ace Hardware on East College Avenue in Decatur is closing.

The company announced the closure on its Facebook page on July 7.

“After 42 successful years, the Decatur store has closed its doors to allow the property to be developed,” the announcement said. “We thank you for your loyalty and your business.”

Smith Ace Hardware also has another location in Buckhead. An employee who answered the phone there, but declined to give his name, said the owners of the hardware store and the building couldn’t reach an agreement about the lease.

He said the building was also “falling apart” and in need of significant renovations.

“We knew we were on borrowed time,” the employee said.

He said Smith plans to open a second location in Marietta.

What a shame. They should have said “to make room for another crappy Walmart”.

Wal-Mart had little or nothing to do with it, but Home Depot did!

Or “because the property’s owner wanted to put in East Decatur Station II: Craft Beer and Haircuts Boogaloo”

This is awful, terrible news. What a shame. I just purchased and moved into my (OLD!) house within walking distance from Smith’s Hardware barely a month ago and have made almost daily visits. It’s been indispensable! I guess I’ll have to go to the next closest place: Home Depot. There’s ALWAYS some foolishness going on at that Home Depot. Foolishness, I say! There are far less useful (and far uglier) storefronts and urban blight on this strip of College Ave; why can’t that nasty tire shop or auto repair store go under (I know you’re asking “which one?”)? This is a step backwards.

You don’t have to go to HD. Intown Ace would be about the same distance.

YES! Thank you for the info. A neighbor also just mentioned this. Sounds like Intown Ace is enriched (as in uranium; as in da bomb!). Can’t wait to try it.

I have shopped at Smith Ace since I was a child (1950’s) – seen this closure coming for a while now – the building was in really bad shape, but the staff were always wonderful and so helpful. Hope Ace will get them new positions in other stores – too much knowledge to waste!

We have had a huge outpouring of support for Allen and the hard working employees of Smith Ace Hardware. We would like everyone to know that we are going to auction off the entire inventory Saturday July 19th at 10am. Over $300k in inventory will be sold to the highest bidder. Here is a link to the items in the sale.
