Qualifying for candidates looking to replace former District 1 Commissioner Elaine Boyer ended Wednesday, Sept. 10, and the county is also planning to set aside a Sunday in October for early voting.

Boyer resigned her commission seat last month and later pleaded guilty to charges of mail and wire fraud. The special election will be held on the same day as the general election, Nov. 4.

The qualifying candidates are:

– Wendy Butler

– Larry Danese

– Nancy Jester

– Tom Owens

– Holmes E. Pyles

If a runoff is needed, it will be held on Dec. 2. The last day to register for the special election is Oct. 6.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Jim Galloway reports that DeKalb County will become the first in the state to offer Sunday as an option for early voting, an idea that’s already generating some push back from Republicans. For more on that story, click here.
