Drew Charter School opened its middle and high school campus in July on the former “back nine” of the Charlie Yates Golf Course in East Lake.

The 205,800 square foot building can accommodate 1,000 middle and high school students. It has two gymnasiums, a 525 seat performing arts center and a full sized track. The building cost $55 million to construct, according to Danny Shoy, President of the East Lake Foundation, the organization backing the charter school.

Want to see the new campus? You’ll have a chance this Saturday, Sept. 27, as the school holds its “Grand Opening Community Day Celebration.” The event lasts from 2 pm to 5 pm and will be a fine fall festival, with a photo booth, food trucks and karaoke.

“Anything you would think of at a large community fair we would likely have on the premises,” Shoy said.

The event is open to the public and he encouraged people to bring lawn chairs.

Shoy and other school staff will be leading tours of the school throughout the afternoon.

So what can people expect to see on their tour?

“They can expect to see a school that’s physically very attractive,” Shoy said. “Beyond what’s happening on the outside, they’re going to be amazed by the 21st century technology.”

The school is located at 301 East Lake Blvd SE, in Atlanta, GA.
