This story has been updated.

It looks like the Oakhurst Streetscape project could begin soon.

City Commissioners approved a project budget and awarded a contract during their regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 20.

When completed, the project will transform the heart of Oakhurst at the intersections of Oakview Road, East Lake Drive, West Hill Street and West Benson Street. There will be new sidewalks, lighting and trees along these roads, Saxon said. The project will also increase the size of Oakhurst’s Harmony Park. Off-street parking on the park’s south side will be replaced with a pedestrian plaza.

In August, Assistant City Manager Hugh Saxon said business owners could see work begin this month.

Commissioners set the project budget at $2 million and awarded a $1.4 million construction contract to Norcross-based Construction Management and Engineering Services.

According to the documentation provided with Monday’s agenda, funding will be provided by a state Department of Transportation Grant of $1 million and $985,000 in bond money from the city’s capital projects fund.

The project will take about 12 months to complete.

What was the delay between August and October is my question? By the time this actually starts it will be November?

    • Brad

If they bid in August, its takes usually 2 months to review the bids and get someone under contract. Federal funds, Glacial pace.

Its been a glacial pace since 2007 – was told by Hugh Saxson work would commence on August 18th – concerned about Festivals and other events for 2015 with the delay…

Dan, do you know what the outcome was from the city council meeting last night?

    • It passed. Sorry, I should’ve updated that. Last night was one of those rare instances where I had two meetings to cover that were going on at the same time, Decatur and Avondale. I showed up after the vote occurred, but the city spokesperson told me that it passed.

Thanks Dan! I wonder when the shovels will actually come out…
