Avondale Estates is offering additional time for residents who might be interested in joining the city’s Tree Ordinance Ad Hoc Committee.

The original deadline of Nov. 26 has been extended to Friday, Dec. 5, “In order to obtain a sufficient number of applicants.”

“The committee will compile findings and report them to the Avondale Estates Tree Board to seek their comments as part of their recommendation to the BOMC,” the announcement from the city says. “The committee will present their recommendation to the BOMC at the Regular Work Session on Feb. 18, 2015.”

There are 12 spots available.

– Residential tree ordinances in other cities

– The pros and cons of said ordinances

– Potential legal challenges to a residential tree ordinance

The city announced the formation of the committee after residents asked City Commissioners for stronger regulations on residential tree removal. As development increases in Avondale, so does the clear-cutting of lots to build bigger houses.

Avondale isn’t the only city grappling with the issue. In May, the Decatur City Commission approved a stronger tree ordinance. Atlanta also is considering revising its tree ordinance.
