Decatur Police found a woman shot to death behind an office building last night.

Decatur Police Sgt. Jennifer Ross said officers responded to a call of a deceased person at 10:55 pm on Dec. 6 in the 100 block of East Ponce de Leon Avenue. Witnesses told police that they saw the victim lying on the ground as they were exiting a parking deck.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the victim suffered a gunshot,” Ross said. “A murder investigation is ongoing at this time.”

A witness did report hearing a shot fired, Ross said.

“Officers were on their way to the person down call when they were notified someone reported having heard a gunshot,” Ross said.

Ross said Sunday afternoon that police officials are working to notify the woman’s family before her name is released. There are no suspects at this time.

This is Decatur’s first reported homicide since the October 2013 stabbing death of Shirley Kendrick.

WSB-TV reports that police found the body behind One Decatur Town Center.
