The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that City Schools of Decatur has placed four acres of property along Talley Street under contract and plans to build a school there.

CSD will reportedly pay $5 million for the property, the AJC reported. The AJC story says the purchase will likely be contingent upon the approval of a $75 million bond for school construction. That issue will be on the ballot this November. The passage of the bond is far from a certainty. Voters would have to willingly raise their own taxes by 8 percent so CSD can borrow the money, and total property values in Decatur are projected to grow by 20 percent over last year.

Decaturish has reached out to CSD for more information about this story and will update when the school system responds.

Insiders say CSD really missed the boat when they decided not to purchase Devry because it was “too far away.” Lots of turnover this year with kindergarten classes at 30 plus and “cottages” i.e., trailers at every school. Families from outside the limits are going to rent those many new apartments bringing four kids into a system while renting a one bedroom. Going to be a tough year as the smoke and mirrors continue to be polished while the kids and teachers under a lot of pressure from lack of planning on the part of the school board and the City leaders.

Are there any occupancy rules for the 1 bedroom apartments?

If it’s K-3, then what kids would go there? We need another K-3 but not in that location (Oakhurst would be better). For that location a 4/5 Academy makes more sense I think.
