In a statement, former President Jimmy Carter announced he is battling cancer.

From the Carter Center website:

Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.

Earlier this month, Carter had a “small mass” removed from his liver at Emory University Hospital, according to CNN.com. Carter is 90 years old and was 39th president of the United States, from 1977 to 1981.

He is the grandfather of Jason Carter, a former state Senator for Decatur who recently ran for governor and lost to Gov. Nathan Deal.
