Apparently parents of students at Oakhurst Elementary – one of Decatur’s easiest schools to walk to – have been committing some pretty obvious traffic violations.

That will end soon, the school says.

The school sent out an email the afternoon of Oct. 12 warning parents that police have been notified.

“There have been many complaints concerning parking and traffic violations during school hours in Oakhurst,” the email says. “Please be aware that we have been informed that the Decatur Police will begin issuing citations for any traffic/parking violations beginning tomorrow.”

The school was recently recognized for its participation in the Safe Routes to School program, naming Oakhurst Elementary the “Partner of the Year” for metro Atlanta. The program encourages students to walk or bike to school.

Oakhurst’s program has received national attention. Last year, it was featured in a CNN story about the Safe Routes program.
