The city of Decatur is looking for volunteers to help with the Publix Georgia Marathon as it passes through the city on Sunday, Mar. 20.

The city needs help laying out a welcome mat for the runners, and it also wants volunteers to set out signs along the route.

“Specifically we are looking for folks to adopt sections of College Avenue between Wahoo Grill and South Columbia Drive; downtown Decatur along Commerce Drive from the Columbia overpass to Ponce de Leon Avenue; E. Ponce de Leon to Clairemont and then Clairemont to Commerce; and finally Clairemont Avenue to the YMCA. Signs are easy to install and can be placed on Saturday or early Sunday morning,” The Decatur Minute blog said.

The signs come in a set of five. The city said it has more than 50 sets to put out. City crews will pick up the signs after the race.

The city said, “If you, your neighbors or your neighborhood association is willing to lend a hand, contact Shirley Baylis at [email protected] or give her a call at 678-553-6573.”

Here’s the full post from the city:

Do you love marathons, but hate running? Are you looking for a fun, easy way to get involved in your community? Do you think your neighborhood streets could use a little temporary pizzazz? If you answered yes to any of these questions (or none of them, for that matter), then this is the volunteer opportunity for you!

Here are the details:

The Publix Atlanta Marathon will pass through our City on Sunday, March 20th and we need your help laying out a welcome mat for the runners.  We’re looking for area residents willing to adopt a portion of the route and set out the tongue in cheek “Burma Shave” rhyme signs along the route (see example pictured above).  Specifically we are looking for folks to adopt sections of College Avenue between Wahoo Grill and South Columbia Drive; downtown Decatur along Commerce Drive from the Columbia overpass to Ponce de Leon Avenue; E. Ponce de Leon to Clairemont and then Clairemont to Commerce; and finally Clairemont Avenue to the YMCA.  Signs are easy to install and can be placed on Saturday or early Sunday morning.   Each set contains five separate signs and we have over 50 sets that need to go out along the route.   City crews will pick up the signs after the race on Sunday.  If you, your neighbors or your neighborhood association is willing to lend a hand, contact Shirley Baylis at [email protected] or give her a call at 678-553-6573.
