A nonprofit organization that supports parents who have lost a baby in pregnancy or infancy is holding a fundraiser in downtown Decatur in April.

The Georgia chapter of The TEARS Foundation will host its annual walk fundraiser at the Decatur Toy Park at First Christian Church of Decatur, 133 Nelson Ferry Rd. The walk goes from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

“The Rock & Walk” lets “bereaved families know they are not alone” and works to “raise funds to support these families and build community awareness about pregnancy and infant loss,” the organization said. “Individuals form teams and collect pledges to ‘walk’ on the path and to ‘rock’ in rocking chairs.”

TEARS says funds go to help bereaved families with funeral assistance, emotional support, and more.

Merry Pope, leader of the Georgia chapter of TEARS, said pregnancy and infancy loss is the organization’s primary focus, but it has begun offering other types of assistance in recent years. “In addition to our infant funeral assistance program, we also offer assistance with funeral expenses for young children (up to 12 yrs old) who unexpectedly passed due to an accident, homicide or other unexpected death,” Pope said in an email.

Pope said TEARS also works to reduce SIDS deaths by offering cribs to families who cannot afford them.

Organizers say individuals can register for the April walk online and can also create an optional online fundraising page.

The website says, “Early-bird registration is $5 for those who register before March 20, 2016. After this time registration will be $10. Children 12 & under receive free admittance.”
