A driver attempting to avoid running over a squirrel became involved in an accident that sent two children to the hospital, Decatur Police Lt. Jennifer Ross said.

Ross said the accident occurred Thursday afternoon, June 2, on the 600 block of Kirk Road. Police responded to the call at approximately 5:13 p.m.

“The driver observed a squirrel in the road and veered off of the roadway striking large decorative rocks on the shoulder,” Ross said. “The vehicle overturned and came to rest at the bottom of a ravine. Two of the five occupants in the vehicle, a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old, sustained lacerations and were transported to a local hospital. The driver was cited for failure to maintain lane.”
