The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has made two arrests in connection with the Aug. 11 murder of a man on LaVista Road.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Benjamin Carpenter, 18, was arrested on charges of murder and aggravated assault. He and a second suspect, an unidentified juvenile, are accused of murdering Lucio Vasquez.

“Authorities say an illegal drug transaction may have been related to the shooting,” a press release from the Sheriff’s Office said. “Mr. Carpenter was apprehended without incident in Decatur and transported to the DeKalb County Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.”

Carpenter has attended Decatur High, but it is not clear if he is still a student there.

According to the incident report, the murder occurred at Sloan Square Apartments, located at 1555 LaVista Road.

The witness to the crime told DeKalb Police she picked up Vasquez, who told her to drive to the apartments to pick up his two friends. The two suspects, not identified in the report, met her at her car. Both suspects got into the back of the vehicle, the report says. The witness said that when Vasquez turned to look at the two suspects, he said, “Oh shit!” while lunging toward the back seat. The witness said she heard multiple gunshots from behind the driver’s seat. The witness started driving away, and at that point the suspects ran from the vehicle toward the back of the apartment complex. The witness drove the victim to Emory Hospital, and he was pronounced dead on arrival.
