The city says the long wait for Google Fiber high-speed internet services may be drawing to a close.

“Google Fiber contractors are currently constructing on the south side of Decatur,” the city said in a press release. “The first phase includes installing an underground infrastructure which may cause some interruptions. They will then come back at a later date (soon to be announced) to implement the above ground infrastructure.”

The city says the contractors are obtaining the last of the permits needed to finish the job. The contractors will move to other areas “in the coming months” the city says.

“The City of Decatur has on-going coordination meetings to discuss public notification, detours, and making sure that the accurate construction process is being performed,” the city says.

Google Fiber confirmed its expansion to the Atlanta market in January 2015. At the time, company representatives said the build out would take two years. The service already is available in some places in Atlanta. In the last few weeks, Google Fiber has laid off some of its staff and has scaled back plans for high speed internet in 10 cities. The company says its plans for Atlanta are unaffected and everything is still a go.
