“The City of Avondale Estates invites the community to celebrate Arbor Day and the city’s 33rd year as a Tree City,” the announcement from the city says. “Avondale Estates is one of the few tree cities in DeKalb County and one of the first tree cities in the state of Georgia. The Avondale Estates Garden Club has once again donated funds for the purchase of a memorial tree. This year’s tree planting will be in memory of Pegge Brown.”

The Arbor Day Foundation has given the city a Growth Award for “demonstrating environmental improvements and a higher level of tree care.”

In order to be recognized by Tree City USA, the city has to have:

– A tree board or department

– A tree-care ordinance

– An annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita

– An Arbor Day observance and proclamation

The city is also in the process of reworking its tree ordinance. A draft of the proposal will be discussed at the Feb. 22 City Commission work session. To see the agenda, click here.
