This coming school year, the City Schools of Decatur will have a shortage of backpacks and other school supplies for children in need. To tackle the lack of supplies, CSD, along with the Decatur Education Foundation and local PTA/PTO organizations, will hold a “backpack drive” to get these materials donated for distribution.

According to CSD, approximately 80 students in the school system last year were identified as being homeless, with around 700 students total qualifying for free and reduced meals. Those students, who range in age from 4 to 18 years old, often struggle to afford the right materials for school, so CSD is asking for donations of all types of school supplies and backpacks.

The drive will take place on Friday, July 28, from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at CSD’s Central Office, as well as the DEF office, located at 200 Nelson Ferry Rd, Suite B, Decatur, GA 30030.

Donations of gift cards to a store at which supplies can be purchased are also welcome. Gift cards can be dropped off or mailed to the DEF office.

Students start back August 1, so the backpacks will be distributed during the last week of July and the first week of August at the direction of the CSD Homeless Liaison/Social Worker, CSD said. All donations and beneficiaries remain anonymous to each other through this process.

You can sign up to donate any item here.
