According to Decatur Police, the incident happened around 3:22 p.m.

“The investigation revealed two pedestrians were crossing Commerce Drive at North Candler Street in the crosswalk,” Lt. Jennifer Ross said. “The vehicle was exiting the Kroger parking lot and making a left turn onto Commerce Drive to travel eastbound and struck one of the pedestrians. The driver of the vehicle stated she did not see the pedestrians in the crosswalk.”

Merlin was transported to a hospital, but later succumbed to her injuries.

At the time of the accident, the driver was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, but police indicated she would face additional charges.
