The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will be conducting a pedestrian count on Wednesday, Jan. 13 on South Candler Road.

Winnona Park Elementary School said in an email newsletter that it is rescheduling its Walk and Roll Day from this week until next to coincide with the study.

The email noted that neighborhood groups have been urging the city to work with GDOT to make South Candler Road safer for pedestrians.

The email said, “They are looking for community interest in making S. Candler a safe place for pedestrians so we all need to get out there! If you come from Oakhurst or MAK, please make an effort to walk or bike to school this day. If you live south of Winnona, walk to school along S. Candler. If you drop your kids off at school and then go for a walk or a run, please make crossing S. Candler part of your route on the 13th. This is our chance to show the GDOT that we want our streets to be safe for our children.”

New District 2 City Commissioner Brian Smith called for neighbors to show support for the GDOT pedestrian study at Monday night’s Decatur commission meeting.
