The Avondale Estates City Commission will hold a special called meeting on Wednesday, March 23, following a work session. One of the items on the agenda is renewing the city manager’s contract.

Clai Brown has been the city manager since 2008. He is the son of Dewey Brown, who was the city manager and police chief for Avondale Estates for 46 years.

Brown currently makes a salary of $162,496. His salary is roughly equal to that of Decatur City Manager Peggy Merriss, who earns $162,000. Decatur has a population of more than 20,000 people. Avondale Estates has a population of just less than 3,000.

When Brown’s contract was renewed in 2014, city officials said he was making approximately $150,000.

During Wednesday’s special called meeting, commissioners will consider making an appointment to the Downtown Development Authority. They will also consider approving an application for deck and patio sales for the new Rising Son restaurant and the Purple Corkscrew, which recently opened in Avondale Estates.

The special called meeting begins at 8 p.m. and follows a work session that begins at 5 p.m. To see the work session agenda, click here. To see the meeting agenda, click here.

Both meetings will be held at City Hall, located at 21 North Avondale Plaza. All meetings are open to the public.
